Specialized Bicycle Components, Inc. – Recalls Due to Fall Hazards

On September 25th, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Specialized Bicycle Components, Inc., of Morgan Hill, California, is recalling about 12,000 bicycles which pose fall hazards to riders. The recalled bicycles, which were manufactured in China, have defective front forks. There have been at least four reports received on front forks breaking while consumers were riding the bicycles, resulting in facial fractures and other head injuries, as well as shoulder injuries.

The recall involves some 2008 and 2009 women’s and men’s Globe model bicycles, sold at Authorized Specialized retailers nationwide from July 2007 to July 2012 for between $550 and $1,100.

At any point during the bicycle design and manufacturing process, significant failures may contribute to vehicle’s hazards, including (1) missteps during the early design stages; (2) inadequate testing to ensure safe performance; and (3) marketing efforts that include inadequate instructions and warnings, or even fail to include any relevant cautions. Even one act of negligence during the process from a bicycle’s conception to its sale can cause catastrophic injuries and wrongful death once the product reaches unsuspecting consumers.
