75 Drownings and Near-Drownings in the First Few Months of 2011

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) Pool Safety: Simple Steps Save Lives campaign is releasing its 2011 public service announcements (PSAs) to educate people about the steps that can be taken regarding water safety, with a focus on saving lives.

In fifteen weeks, there have been reportedly been 37 drownings and 38 near-drowning incidents. Summer is just around the corner, and the CPSC is urging parents and children to follow the safety precautions they will be broadcasting. Such steps include staying close to children at all times, being alert, having the appropriate water safety equipment, and learning water safety skills. All of these steps can help save lives.

It is also important to note that the CPSC is conducting an investigation into the safety of pool and spa drain covers and the adequacy or testing procedures used to determine the flow rating of these drain covers. So far the investigation has revealed that some testing protocols at laboratories may not comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. If the flow ratings are inaccurate for pool drain covers, the covers may fail to prevent entrapment. The CPSC recommends that pool and spa owners contact their service providers and product manufacturers for additional information on testing and certification of drain covers, until the CPSC completes its investigation. Caution should always be taken by pool operators, parents, and caregivers while watching children, who should always be kept away from pool drains and other openings.
